What Is A Load Cell?

Load cells are transformator of power that used to determine the weight of an object . Load cells subjected to forces as strain , torque , compression or pressure convert this force that to measurable data. Load cells are utilized so many areas as bath scales that in houses and scales in greengrocery stores and also scales that can measure hundreds of kilos. How Does Work Load Cell?

So how does a load cell work? Everything in the world is affected from gravity, all objects constantly being pulled to metal core of our planet. This force exerted by gravity on objects named as weight. Load cells convert the force (applied by compression and tension) to digital data and then forward it to display by load cell cable. While the working principle of a load cell can be expressed in the simplest way, it should not be forgotten that different types of cells have different working principles.

What Is The Types Of Load Cell?

Today, there are different types of load cells used to measure the force according to their usage areas. Although they all seem to measure basically the same, they offer solutions to different needs. The three most basic and popular types of load cells are:

  • Strain Gauge Load Cells
  • Pneumatic Load Cell
  • Hydroulic Load Cell 

Strain Gauge, Strain Load Cell

The most commonly used type of load cell among these three is strain gauges. Nowadays, it is possible to find a strain gauge load cell produced in almost every scale. Generally, they are made of a very thin wire or a grid-like metal foil arranged in a certain pattern. These parts convert the weight of the object affecting the cell into an electrical signal. Most modern load cells use a wired system consisting of four strain gauges to achieve maximum measurement accuracy.

When an object is placed on a scale, the resistance of each strain gauge will change in a way that causes fluctuations in the output voltage. The fluctuation in the output voltage is converted into a digital value that can be read by the scale operator. The circuit structure used to achieve maximum accuracy in measurement is called the Wheatstone bridge. There are three basic configurations categorized by the number of strain gauges in the Wheatstone bridge of the cell:

  • Quarter Bridge: 1 strain gauge

  • Half Bridge: 2 strain gauges

  • Full Bridge: 3 strain gauges

These three basic configurations are further divided into sub-configurations according to the directions of the active elements and the type of measured voltage.

Pneumatic Load Cell

A pneumatic load cell works by using a pressure gauge to measure the displacement of a compressed gas, usually air, inside an internal diaphragm. When an object is putted on the scale , diaphragm will be under pressure from the weight of the object and pneumatic load cells will leaks as much as air the weight of object. The weight of the object can be determined by measuring the leaking air. Its durable high temperature places, ıt has low range of error and ıt doesnt have the risk of the liquid leakage so that Its prefered areas such as labaratories.

Hydroulic Load Cell  

Althougt the similar working system with Pneumatic Load Cell , Hydroulic Load Cells use oil or another liquid instead of compressed air. When an object placed to the scale the weight is transmitted to the piston that compressed the oil. The pressure will be increased as much as the weight of object. It works completely mechanically and doesnt need to power supply so that ıts preferred when there is no power suply.
